Why did I want to be a real estate agent AFTER I grew up? Well, I have a very good answer!
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and met my husband (also from the Chicago suburbs) at college in Winona, MN. We were engaged in 1991 and a month later he was transferred to Kansas City! Neither of us had ever been to KC, so we took a leap of faith to make a new life in Kansas City and never looked back!
After 10 years in the adult beverage industry as a key account manager I decided to leave it behind to have my first child. Fast forward 18 years and we have 4 children ages 18,17,13 and 11. I found myself wondering now that they are older, what did I want to do for ME?
My husband I built our first (and only) house in 1992 in southern Johnson County. We had planned to move every 5 years and step it up a bit each time, however we loved our neighbors, our home and everything that had built up around us. After our 4th child was born, we felt like we had outgrown our 4 bedroom 2 story home and started looking for homes that would help us keep up with our growing family. I kept my real estate agent friend busy showing me home after home, but it was too far from highway access, or it didn''t have 5 bedrooms, or it needed too much work, etc. What I realized, what mattered to us the most, was in my own home and neighborhood ... wonderful caring neighbors who are more like family than friends, my grocery store, doctors office and bank all within walking distance, a great school district for my kids, easy highway access and a home I love. So, after much soul searching, my husband and I decided to stay where we are, fix up our home and put a pool in the backyard! Done! No need to move.
However, I really did love the process of going into the home needing updating or removing a wall and envisioning the possibilities. I missed going into older homes which had been beautifully updated to follow the trends or into the beautiful new construction that was popping up all around southern Johnson County and beyond. I would browse the real estate websites for fun and tell my friends about a home I found that would be perfect for their family. They would tell me I should be a Realtor, which made me laugh.
When I decided to return to work, I wanted something rewarding and to help people. I remembered the advice of my friends who know me best and took what they said to heart. I thought, ''I know what I want to be AFTER I grow up ... a Realtor'', and got my real estate license soon after!
Now, I am excited and happy to meet a client to help them to find their first home, their dream home or their home after they have raised their family. I have embraced Kansas City as my hometown and I have loved getting to know everything about it.
